Digital media

News, services, sport and entertainment: with this mix, RP Online has long established itself amongst the widest reaching news portals in Germany. The media group proves its digital competence with its mobile portal and its ePaper and app offerings. The creation of its own digital business area sped up its expansion into online classified advertising and a venture business was systematically established.

RP Digital

RP Online is one of the most successful news portals in Germany and the leading news portal for a German regional medium on the Internet. With around 90 million page impressions per month and around 20 million visits, the online edition of the Rheinische Post has established itself within the top ten German news websites.

Even at the very beginning in 1996, the media group began to expand their Internet flagship. While other print houses restricted their readers to a short summary of the printed edition electronically online, RP Online were presenting their own, up-to-date content from the very start.

The Rheinische Post supplemented and broadened the online offer and exploited all the technical opportunities that the printed newspaper was unable to offer: RP Online now offers news stories from all 29 local news offices of the Rheinische Post, sports results tables and services, a Fortuna forum and a live ticker. Thanks to the mobile portal, Online RP is present on the major news portals for smartphones; football apps from Fortuna Düsseldorf, Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen round off the offer.

With a joint news desk in the central editorial office in Dusseldorf, the cross-media cooperation and constant exchange between print and online forms an exemplary role model. The content is produced almost around the clock by an integrated editorial staff of almost 300 people, who serve the entire use channels. Surveys confirm that the newspaper is the most credible form of media in the eyes of consumers. The media group has carried this mark of quality over to the Internet: the user can also find the majority of the content of the Rheinische Post online.

The team is continuously widening the multimedia reporting: news videos analyse important worldwide events on a daily basis; large regional events are transmitted live by mobile phone video. The offer is rounded off by the lifestyle portal Tonight, the popular football portal FuPa, an event portal and RP Freude and RP Trauer.

Rheinische Post App

The daily app from the Rheinische Post offers readers all the benefits of the newspaper on iPad and Android devices – in conjunction with new multimedia elements. As in the printed edition, there are daily app headline stories, various categories, lead stories, analysis and comments. The display of the content is optimised for tablets and is available the preceding evening from 9pm. In addition, there are supplementary components such as interactive graphics, 360 degree panoramic photos and – e.g. in the sports section – a wide range of photo galleries and videos.

Within the app, the reader can select up to three local editions – for the same price. And in addition to the six regular editions from Monday to Saturday, RP Plus – our award-winning digital Sunday magazine with many articles, interactive elements and up-to-date sports reports – is integrated into the daily app from the Rheinische Post.

The app is even cheaper for subscribers to the printed version. It can also be ordered individually or as a monthly subscription.

Immowelt Holding

On 30 June 2015, the Immowelt Holding AG arose from the merger of the markt.gruppe majority stakeholder Immowelt AG with the Axel Springer company Immonet GmbH. The Rheinische Post Mediengruppe is – like markt.gruppe partner Ippen-Mediengruppe – a 17.5% stakeholder in Immowelt Holding. Two powerful brands – immowelt.de and immonet.de – thus joined together to form the number two in the German real estate segment. Each month, the two portals achieve around 40 million visits and more than 1.4 million contact requests from estate agents.

Stakes in start-up businesses

Alongside its direct activities and stakes in the digital sector, the Rheinische Post media group is also active as a venture partner for supporting young, innovative digital businesses. As a rule, investments are not direct but through Venture Capital funding, in which the group has a substantial stake. This currently includes Multi Company Venture Fund's "Capnamic United Venture I" and "b-to-v Internet & Mobile Technologies". With offices in Berlin, Cologne and Switzerland as well as a worldwide network in the start-up and venture sector, these funding engagements support the increasingly digitalised direction and shift of the Rheinische Post media group. In individual cases, additional direct investment in start-up companies can also be carried out. Follow-on investments are offered in new applied Fonds Capnamic II.
